Research Blog: Music Video Comventions

The song we decided on for our video was “Africa” by the band Toto. The song has been a favourite of mine for many years so this excited me quite a bit.

The band Toto is categorized as a rock band, therefore we need to look at typical rock band music videos to observe conventions.

Right off the bat one of the most common traits with all these rock and roll music videos is that the band members are in it for one reason or another. Sometimes they are acting a roll in the video, other times they are just playing in the background. We are obviously not Toto so that aspect might be different.

Another trope in many rock music videos is to bass the different parts of the video around the sound of the song. Many songs have faster, slower and higher, lower tempo portions. These changes impact the way the video flows through the different scenes and actions taking place. Most of the time the video is made to match the song. Occasionally it is the other way, especially with animated music videos this is even more common.

Editing typically revolves around the sound of the song. For example a quick more messy song will have choppy quick edits, as opposed to a slower, neater song which would have more controlled eding. Due to our choice of song a more refined/ controlled editing style would fit better, like something from the Radwimp’s music videos.

Many times cameras are following the band around wherever they are going. Other times they simply point towards and move around a stage or performance area where the band is playing.

Overall majority of rock music videos are a filming of a performance (Ex: Inferno by: Mrs. Green Apple) or show some sort of story or major events taking place (Ex: Acacia By:Bump of Chicken.) Though there are many tropes and conventions, all music videos are very different from one another due to the fact that music itself varies so much from artist to artis, and band to band.

Shown below is a music video by the band The Radwimps for the song "Zenzenzence"
